What do you get when you put together 200 bloggers, a nation-wide relay, a baton and Sport/Comic Relief? Answer: Team Honk Relay. This zany, ever-so-British, phenomenon is about to hit St Albans, after starting in Lands End (Cornwall) 2 weeks ago, coming our way on 4th February, and ending up in John O’Groats on 23rd March to coincide with Sport Relief Weekend (see end of post for more).
St Albans bloggers, including yours truly, will be receiving the baton from the Hemel Hempstead bloggers late morning and, dressed up in silly outfits, will scoot or human chain through the City with the baton on Tuesday 4 February to help raise much needed funds for Sport/Comic Relief. We’ll be organising the longest human chain of school kids to pass the baton from one school to the other (my kids’s school). Wahoo!
My silly outfit will be the wonderful George from Rainbow (remember, that quaint TV show from our 1970s youth?) to accompany Annie from AnnieQPR who’ll be sporting a Zippy outfit. I would’ve mud-wrestled her for my pre-school hero, but seeing as she arranged the free hire of them from local fancy dress shop, Fun Zone, she gets first dibs, and rightly so (well done Annie!). The non-stop talking character was my total favourite as a kid, can’t think why…..:-)
My poor daughter is incredulous at the prospect. She’s getting to that age when mum can be, you know, embarrassing (well, that probably started ages ago, but she’s only started to feel it in the past year). I hastened to not remind her that I would be turning up to school in it. That can wait a few more days…
Anyway, we’ve managed to get the lovely mayor, Annie Brewster, involved which will add a bit of pzazz to the whole thing – she’s the most up for fun mayor we’ve ever had, as well as being glamorous, warm and a total breath of fresh air to the world of Mayor-dom (quite like that made-up word). Cuthberts, the local toy shop, will be providing her with a scooter to join us on, and we have another small sporting challenge lined up for her too, involving my kids’ school and a running track….
Anyway, please do sponsor us, and make all our frivolity worth it for Comic Relief.

A few quid is all we need, nothing major. But we would like to beat last year’s Team Honk effort of a massive £10K!
